About Me

I'm Nathan Calvas and I'm a

Hi! My name is Nathan Calvas. I am a Senior Linux Engineer with 10 years experience. My career began as a Windows Engineer working with Novell Netware in which I switched gears to Linux shortly after that and have been wheels down ever since. I also have a background in Network Engineering and have dabbled with Cisco, Juniper, and Fortinet as well. I am very passionate about my work and enjoy learning every step of the way.

What I Do

Skills

  • Automation

The term "work smarter, not harder" is the key to ensuring things are done quickly and more efficently. I actively work with Ansible to complete these tasks, but in the past, I have worked with Puppet, Chef, and SaltStack.

  • Monitoring/Metrics

The key to ensuring problems do not go unnoticed and inefficencies are caught before they can be a real problem. My current toolset is Nagios, InfluxDB and Telegraf as well as Datadog, New Relic, and Vivid Cortex but I have also used Icinga, Server Density, Zabbix in the past as well.

  • Network Engineering

My career started in college when I took a Cisco CCNA course at college which was required for my degree. Ever since then, I've had a passioning for network and have broadened my skillset to include Juniper, Fortinet, and Palo Alto. I currently manage our DataCenter's Network operations running Juniper MX Routers and combination of QFX (Core/Distribution) and EX (Management/iDRAC) Switches. We recently have added FortiGate 600E for VPN and Site-to-Site communcations. For branch offices and local customers, we deploy Fortinet FortiGate, FortiSwitch, and FortiAP Equipment through our partnership with Fortinet.

  • Virtualization

Currently I manage our Cloud Hosting Platform that is based off of the Joyent Triton DataCenter. Outside of our DataCenter Platform, I also manage customers that have use Microsoft Hyper-V and VMWare ESXi. For those other customers hosted in the cloud, I have had opporunities of working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Compute (GCP), Digital Ocean, IBM Cloud (formerly Softlayer), Rackspace, and Microsoft Azure to handle each client's workload and needs.

  • Linux Administration

Here is where it all started for me. I began in fixing and debugging CentOS/RHEL 4 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS systems all the way up to the Current CentOS/RHEL 8 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS systems. I handled all projects such as service installations/tunning, migration of machines, upgrades, service maintenances, and everything in between. With the help of Monitoring and Metrics, it has helped provide tuning of Web Application and Services, and/or Database Systems to ensure optimal configuration to handle the work. When needed, load balancing is configured and brought into play to help systems and servers scale out as needed to support the workload intended.

  • Backups/DR Planning

While I have used many different providers (R1Soft/Idera CDP, Backup Exec, Ahsay, Bacula, and Amanda Backup); currently, I am actively utilizing Veeam's Suite of Tools to handle the task. Veeam does local backup copies with Offsite Backup Copy Replication while also providing end-to-end Encryption to secure data. Some configurations also have VM failover which allows the Backup Server to run the latest server restore point in case of hardware failure to get our customer servers up and running with little downtime while the restore point is being transferred back to original machine in the background.

I am a Linux Systems Engineer with a strong passion for Network Engineering and Automation.

My current role with my company is as a Site Reliability Engineer. I handle most tickets and projects as they relate to Linux, Application Deployments, and Server Migrations in regards to customer deployments. Some other tasks that involve me include Networking, Windows Server Engineer, Automation, Monitoring, and Backups.
